This day is not just sad. It’s another assault on our humanity. As soon as we read the first tweet, hashtag Charleston, we all had a sense of what is coming. Blame. Division. Heartbreak…more symptoms of a broken nation. In fact, our nation is so broken that the media will toss this around like a ripped football while the victims become objects and we forget that they are suffering.
This is also the perfect day to share my favorite blog. With over thirteen million followers, surely you’ve heard of Humans of New York, but if you haven’t spent time with these photos I recommend you do. I like to believe that Brandon Stanton captures the humanity God sees. His pictures take an objective look at us, at us humans. Each is beautifully flawed, determinedly hopeful, doggedly resilient – and utterly vital to our living, breathing society. Somehow, Brandon manages to remain entirely objective and the honestly of his lens is far more beautiful than anything Hollywood has produced.
Take a look. And remember that we are all human. It’s easier to love a neighbor when you know his story and that’s what this is about. The puppy videos might help you to giggle today, but Humans of New York is going to warm your heart and connect you to that which is greater. This day is the day we need to find a connection.
